About #4 Crushed Stone

#4 Crushed Stone is a big, angular gray stone, roughly 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches. The pieces are chunky enough to create wide channels for water.

Where it earns its keep

  • Large drainage trenches and sumps
  • Stabilizing muddy access roads
  • Sub-base for heavy pads
  • Erosion control along slopes

On the job

Keep fine soil away from the stone with a filter fabric wrap, or the gaps will clog over time. Size the layer thick enough for the pieces to sit two or three high, and cap with a finer stone if you want a smoother top.

The big, rough stones make good voids, and they stay put on firm ground. Because they are heavy, delivery is easiest when the truck can reach the work area directly. If you want a smoother surface later, top the layer with smaller stone.

How to install #4 Crushed Stone

  1. 1
    Excavate

Strip topsoil to 6-10", with the depth set by traffic and the frost line in your area.

  2. 2
    Lay geotextile fabric

Optional but worth it; a woven separator stops the base from migrating into native soil.

  3. 3
    Spread base layer

Spread the stone in 2-3 inch lifts and compact each lift with a plate compactor before adding the next.

  4. 4
    Crown the surface

Crown the top ~1/4" per foot toward the edges so water sheds.

The lane to our barn turned into soup every spring. We had 20 tons of #4 spread as the bottom layer and it stopped the trucks sinking right away. Big chunky stone, locks together under weight, then we topped it with smaller gravel. Driver did a great job tailgating it down the lane so we barely had to push it around.

Used 10 tons of this as sub-base for a new driveway extension where the ground was soft. It is big crushed stone, roughly two inches, and it does exactly what a base should do. Be ready though, it is not something you spread with a garden rake, you want a machine or a strong back. A few pieces were larger than I expected but nothing unusable.

We had erosion on a slope behind the house every time it stormed. Put 4 tons of #4 stone down and it has not moved since. Chunky gray rock, clean, hardly any fines to speak of. Truck handled our steep driveway fine.
