About 3/4″ Crushed Stone

3/4″ Crushed Stone is angular gray rock, mostly around 3/4 inch. It is one of the most commonly ordered sizes because it works for so many jobs.

Popular uses

  • Base under concrete and pavers
  • Drainage behind walls and around foundations
  • Driveway topping
  • Fill beneath decks and sheds

Laying it out

Spread in layers up to three inches thick and compact each pass. Put fabric underneath on soft soil so the stone does not sink. When used for drainage, skip compaction beyond simple settling so the voids stay open.

This size sits in the middle of the range: large enough to drain freely, small enough to compact and walk on. Many people choose it when they are not sure which stone to use for a general base. It also tends to stay clean and easy to rake. Landscapers often keep a pile around for edging jobs, patching and quick fixes through the season.

Order it by the ton, with a 2 ton minimum. Enter a ZIP code on this page to see the delivered price.

How to install 3/4″ Crushed Stone

  1. 1
    Excavate

Strip topsoil to 6-10", with the depth set by traffic and the frost line in your area.

  2. 2
    Lay geotextile fabric

Optional but worth it; a woven separator stops the base from migrating into native soil.

  3. 3
    Spread base layer

Spread the stone in 2-3 inch lifts and compact each lift with a plate compactor before adding the next.

  4. 4
    Crown the surface

Crown the top ~1/4" per foot toward the edges so water sheds.

  1. Jerome A.

Ordered 5 tons for a paver patio base and it compacted well in two lifts with a rented plate compactor. Stone was good quality. The pile landed a bit further up the driveway than I wanted and spread wider than expected, so I spent an hour raking strays out of the lawn before I could even start. Not a huge deal, just plan for it.

  2. Owen T.

Built a 10 by 16 shed on a bed of this stuff. Two tons covered the footprint about four inches deep with a little left over for the walkway to the door. Tamped down hard and level, no shifting after a summer of rain. Small contractor here and I will keep ordering this crushed stone for shed pads, the size is right for drainage and support at the same time.

  3. Carla V.

Put in a French drain along the side yard and went with 3 tons of 3/4 inch crushed stone around the perforated pipe. Clean, uniform, angular gray stone, no sand or junk in it. Water disappears into the trench now instead of running toward the basement wall. The driver called ahead and set the pile close to the trench so we only had to wheelbarrow it a few feet.

  4. Kristin W.

Our gravel driveway had thinned out to dirt in spots after years of plowing. Eight tons of the 3/4 crushed stone brought it back. It spreads easily with a tractor box blade and locks together once you drive on it a few days. Looks sharp and clean gray. Truck arrived in the window they gave me and the driver spread the load in a long strip like I asked.
