Plan your Wood Chips order

Measure the area, set the depth, and we turn it into a load size in yards. If you already have a number, set it in the order box.

How deep? A top layer on a walkway runs about 2 inches. Parking pads and driveways usually take 4 to 6. Trenches and backfill often go a foot or deeper.

About Wood Chips

Wood Chips are chunky, irregular pieces of chipped wood left in their natural color, so they look more rustic than dyed or finely shredded mulch. They are a light material, which makes them easy to shovel and spread.

Good places to use them

  • Informal garden and woodland paths
  • Rings around trees and shrubs
  • Chicken runs, goat pens and dog areas
  • Temporary ground cover on muddy spots

Spreading advice

Lay them about three inches deep and rake them level. Chips break down gradually, so expect to add a fresh layer every year or two. Pull them back a few inches from stems and trunks so the bark stays dry.

Chips are coarser than shredded mulch, so they leave more air gaps and dry out fast after rain. That is a plus around play spaces and walking routes, where you want a surface that does not stay soggy. They also work as a cheap, quick cover over bare soil while you plan permanent planting.

How to install Wood Chips

  1. 1
    Pull back existing mulch

Don't pile up; that traps moisture and breeds root rot.

  2. 2
    Edge cleanly

Trench or sculpt 4" sharp edges so mulch stays in beds.

  3. 3
    Spread 2-3" deep

Less than 2" loses weed control; more than 3" suffocates roots.

  4. 4
    Keep off trunks

Leave a 2" donut around trunks; never volcano-mulch.

  1. Dwayne P.

Took 12 yards of wood chips to cover a natural area along the back property line and around a cluster of pines. Wanted something rougher and longer lasting than shredded mulch, and this is it. Chunky, mixed sizes, breaks down slowly. Spread it about four inches deep and the weeds have not come back. The truck was full to the brim and the pile was exactly where the flags were.

  2. Roxanne M.

Ordered 4 yards of wood chips for the dog run and the paths between my raised beds. The dogs love it, it stays cleaner than the mud we had before, and their paws come in dry. Coarse enough that it is not blowing around either. Spread it in one afternoon with a pitchfork. Our alley is a tight turn and the driver managed it on the first try.
