Description
Riprap Med is made of large, rough-faced gray stones, mostly between 4 and 9 inches across. The pieces are too heavy to wash away, so they interlock and form a durable armor layer over bare ground.
Where it is used
- Lining ditches and swales that carry runoff
- Protecting the banks of ponds and creeks
- Setting a splash apron under downspout outlets
- Armoring slopes that keep eroding
Placement notes
Grade the slope first, then lay a filter fabric under the stone so soil does not leach out through the gaps. Place the stones in a layer at least two stones thick and nest them tightly rather than dumping them in a loose heap.
The size is large enough that a pickup bed is not the right tool, and a skid steer or excavator makes placement easier. Think about access for the delivery truck and where the stone will be dropped, since moving it by hand is slow. Stones with flat faces are handy for finishing edges.

Small job, just 3 tons of riprap to line a swale where the downspouts dump out and to hold a little slope by the walkout basement. Rock was clean and sized right, no oversized boulders I couldn't lift. The driver dropped it uphill of the swale like I asked so I could work downhill. Will order again.

Lined a drainage ditch along the side of my property with 8 tons of riprap after two springs of watching it wash out. The rock came in the 4 to 9 inch range as listed, nice gray color, chunky and angular so it locks together on the slope. Driver called ahead and tailgated it in a line along the ditch, which saved me hours with the tractor.
